Repair the part that needs attention
Fence problems can start with a single board, a loose connection or a gate that has moved out of alignment. They can also point to damaged posts or wider deterioration. The first step is to understand what has failed and how much of the surrounding fence remains usable.
- Replacement of damaged or missing fence boards
- Repair or replacement of individual fence sections
- Assessment of leaning sections and deteriorated posts
- Gate alignment, latch and hinge repairs
- Replacement gates and associated hardware
- Cedar fence repairs planned to suit the existing layout
Look beyond the visible damage
Replacing a broken board may be straightforward when its supports are sound. A leaning fence needs a different review: post condition, connections, the surrounding ground and adjoining sections all affect the repair. We assess the relevant parts before deciding whether a local repair or a larger replacement is appropriate.
For a gate, we look at the opening, hinges, latch and supporting posts together. A gate that drags may need more than a hardware adjustment. If a section is unstable, avoid leaning on it or using it as support while the condition is being assessed.
Repair or build a new fence?
A targeted repair can make sense when the rest of the fence is in suitable condition. Repeated failures or damage across several parts may call for a broader replacement scope. We can review the options without assuming that every fence needs to be rebuilt.
If you are replacing the full fence or creating a new boundary, see our fence construction and gate installation service. For work elsewhere in the yard, explore our deck repair service or outdoor living projects.
Compare the repair scope, not just the fence length
- A few damaged boards: ask whether the rails and posts can remain, which boards are being replaced and how the new material will differ from the weathered fence.
- One leaning section: the assessment needs to include its posts, connections and adjoining sections. Replacing the visible panel alone may leave the cause unresolved.
- A gate that drags or will not latch: identify whether the issue is the hardware, gate frame, supporting posts or a combination. The opening and swing clearance matter as well as the gate itself.
- Several failing sections: compare the proposed targeted repair with a wider replacement scope. Ask what would remain and which existing conditions would still need attention.
These are questions for an assessment, not a diagnosis from a photograph. Take pictures from a safe position; do not push, climb or dismantle an unstable fence to show us the damage.

What to send for a repair quote
- Your city and a short description of the problem
- A wide photo of the fence and close-ups of damaged areas
- Approximate length and height of the affected section
- Photos of posts, hinges and latches where relevant
- Access details and any nearby planting or structures
- Whether you want to retain the existing appearance or make changes
Price depends on the repair, materials, posts, hardware, access and removal or disposal required. Photos help us start the review; a final scope may require a site visit. We confirm what is included before the repair work is scheduled.
What should a fence repair quote include?
Before comparing totals, check that each quote describes the same work:
- The sections, posts, boards and gate components being repaired or replaced
- Materials, dimensions and any agreed finish or hardware
- What stays in place, including limitations of matching old and new wood
- Removal of old material, disposal, access and protection of nearby planting
- Any site review, utility-locate or approval requirements before work begins
- Exclusions and how additional work would be reviewed if concealed damage is found
A short repair length does not necessarily mean a simple job: a failed post, restricted access or attached gate can change the work involved. Ask for inclusions and exclusions in writing rather than comparing only a per-foot figure.
Before post replacement or changes to the fence
Confirm the boundary and proposed layout. An existing fence is not proof of the legal property line. The City of Vancouver's fence guidance directs owners to a Registered BC Land Surveyor for boundary identification and sets out height and permit conditions. Check the rules for your own municipality and property before changing height or location; City of Vancouver guidance is not a rule for every Metro Vancouver address.
Plan for underground services before digging. BC 1 Call's homeowner guidance specifically includes fence posts. A locate-request confirmation is not clearance to dig: the required responses and utility-owner instructions must be received and followed. Non-member or private services may need separate arrangements. Identify who will coordinate this before ground disturbance begins.
Planning sources reviewed October 26, 2026. Site-specific requirements still need confirmation.
Fence repair questions
Can you repair just one section?
Yes. We can review an individual section, gate or group of damaged boards. The condition of its supports and adjoining fence determines what needs to be included.
Can you match the existing fence?
We can review the board layout, dimensions and finish to coordinate the repair. New wood may differ in colour and grain from weathered material, so an exact visual match should not be assumed.
Can you repair a leaning fence?
We can assess it. The repair depends on why it is leaning and the condition of the posts, connections and surrounding ground. Some sections may need rebuilding rather than straightening.
Do you repair gates as well?
Yes. Tell us whether the gate is dragging, sagging, difficult to latch or physically damaged. Include photos of the gate and the posts that support it.
